Tower Man - any chance you would happen to have Carl's email address? I use to be in his congregation and was a good friend of his son - would sure like to get in touch with him again.

Has Anyone Ever Met Any Celebrities?
by imallgrowedup inthis is a spin-off of another thread where my *mild and chaste* friend, mouthy, admitted to wanting to meet her dream man, tom jones, and that she would even go so far as to throw her bloomers at him, if that is what it would take to get his attention!
well, the mental picture this painted was far too much for me to bear, so i encouraged her to save her red polka-dotted "unmentionables", not only because she might need them in the future, but because i didn't think she'd have to go that far to get his attention.
and i said that - because of a personal experience with him.

I met Mark Mothersbaugh (former lead singer for Devo and in-demand music composer) back in the mid-80's at the Beverly Center (big mall in Beverly Hills). I recognized him in the mall and went up to introduce myself - he was really nice and we ended up chatting with him for about 10 minutes or so.

Watchtower Captions
by Stephanus ina typical 'tower cover depicting a before and after shot of "da good life", watchtower style:.
with the text (rather sloppily, i'm afraid) editted out:.
and some contributions by me (towards the worldwide work, natch!):.

facts about the JW religion
by Dawn ini'm putting together a brochure for release in my area - to local churches and bookstores.
on the first panel i want to explain to the reader why the jw religion is not a "harmless" little church.
so i decided to list in bullet format a few facts that the average person may not be aware of.. for example, bullet 1 will be information on the number of children who have died because of refusing blood (any ideas where i can find exact numbers??).

Why not mention how the Watchtower Soceity strongly discourages it young members from attending a college, university, or any other institution offering higher education?

Beards, can someone explain?
by Satans little helper incan someone give me a sensible explaination as to why the jw's have banned beards?
i was df'd in '90 just as this was becoming a big deal and at the time i thought it was completely rediculous what with jesus probably having a beard.
it was one of the many things that led me to seeing that the gb make arbitrary rules and that the organisation has more to do with control than religion.

I once remember getting into a conversation with an elder about why beards were prohibited and asked him this question - "If God did not want Christians to wear beards then why did he give us facial hair?". He couldn't answer that.

Which is worse - a JW wedding or a JW funeral?
by jgnat inbesides the regular stress that all brides go through, a jw couple must worry about being caught in inappropriate behavior through the engagement period, thereby nixing a kh wedding.
and then there is the stress of the invitation list.
who must be shunned, is so-and-so of an approved state to attend, etc, etc, etc.. then there is the jw funeral, or jw participants in a regular funeral.

For me personally a JW furneral is the worst. The elder who gave the 'talk' at my father's funeral said barely 30 seconds worth of information on my Dad (just factual stuff like his date of birth, death, surviving family members, etc.) - the rest the services was nothing more than a Watchtower infommercial. Then the elders in the hall would not allow my DF'd sister to attend the gathering following the services (she was DF'd over 20 years ago and should have just been considered a non-JW relative in my opinion). The rest of my non-JW family was thorougly disgusted about that! I have since left the religion myself and have sworn that when my mother passes (who is still a JW) that we will have a non-demoninational service for her outside of a Kingdom Hall.
